6 EASY STEPS TO A DIY TERRARIUM

Who doesn’t want to be surrounded by greenery? Experts say having plants in your home is not only pleasing to the eye, but also very good for health. A healthy body more often than not results in a healthy and happy mind. Nonetheless, it was much easier to grow a garden and maintain plants when we didn’t have responsibilities like work and family.

The answer to this dilemma is a Terrarium. It allows you to keep plants in your home without having to put in too much effort. What’s better is, you can indulge your child’s creativity in making one! Be it a monthly family tradition, a unique gift for friends and family or even just a stressbuster for yourself.

With 7 easy to find materials and in 6 easy steps, you can soon fill up your home with plants that you love.

What You Will Need?

  • Glass Tumbler – Pick a size that you can easily work with
  • Succulents / Cacti – These plants will be on display, so make sure you love them!
  • Soil Mix – Because it is ultimately still a plant
  • Moss – Because it keeps the plant flourished
  • Activated Charcoal – To reduce maintenance requirements from you
  • Coloured Pebbles – White and a couple other colours
  • Disposable Gloves – Unless you really want to get your hands dirty

How To Create A Personalized Succulent Plant Glass Display?

Once you’ve gathered all the materials, it’s like making a sandwich; layer after layer of goodness.

  1. Wash & Dry the glass tumbler to remove any stains, paper marks, residual glue from the sticker and the such. We want it to be nice and clean, so the inside can be seen clearly.
  2. Your First Layer in the glass tumbler is going to be pebbles. We prefer white pebbles as a base, but you can choose your own. It’s like choosing between white, wholemeal and wholegrain bread.
  3. Layers Two & Three are activated charcoal and moss in that order. The charcoal reduces toxins and odors in the terrarium. You can do without it, but then you’d have to clean and refresh more often. The Moss keeps the plant flourished.
  4. Layer Number Four is where it gets muddy. Add the soil mix over the moss spreading it as evenly as possible. Use the palm of your hands to gently pat it if need be. Just like you’d want the spread in your sandwich to be evenly spread out.
  5. The Fifth Layer is your Plant. This can be a succulent or cacti. Gently make a hole in the soil, go old-school and use your fingers or use a small spoon. Make sure the hole is big enough to cover the roots of the plant. Remove the plant from its plastic packaging and place it in the hole you dug. Using the palm of your hands, gently pat the area around the roots to ensure it is covered in soil as evenly as possible.
  6. Garnish! Decorate your terrarium with coloured pebbles, figurines, leggos and more. This is where your artistic eye comes in play.

AND WALAH!  Your Personalised Terrarium is ready to go on the shelf! Don’t forget to spray it with water one/twice a week and keep it in indirect light.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT:  Did you know the first Terrarium was built in 1842 by Botanist Nathaniel Bagshaw Ward as an accident, and at the time it was called a Wardian Case.
